ATWAG member questions tourism minister for failing to notify president about his lack of industry expertise

Kyidom Bright, a member of the Art and Tourism Writers Association, Blogger and journalist, boldly questioned Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, the Minister-designate for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, on why he didn’t disclose his lack of sector knowledge to President Akufo Addo during his appointment.

During the Minister’s engagements with industry practitioners in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi, on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, Kyidom Bright expressed skepticism about Egyapa Mercer’s suitability for the role.

Drawing on his experience working with Aben FM and currently with Kyidomonline, Bright directly addressed Mercer, urging him to inform President Akufo Addo about his lack of knowledge regarding the tourism and creative industry.

Egyapa Mercer, in response, acknowledged his limited understanding of the sector and emphasized the importance of support from industry professionals to drive improvements.

However, Bright’s pointed remarks underscored broader concerns about the minister-designate’s preparedness for the role.

In a separate conversation with AttractiveMustapha.com, Bright voiced skepticism about Mercer’s ability to effect significant change within the ministry. “The minister will be going through the documents on the desk in about eight months,” Bright stated, “However, given his limited expertise, it might be challenging for him to make any significant progress.”

Bright contrasted Mercer’s qualifications with those of Hon. Okraku Mantey, highlighting Okraku’s prior experience and knowledge gained from his predecessor, Hon. Awal.
