African Games 2023: Ghana wins gold after Black Princesses defeat Nigeria in final

Ghana’s U-20 women’s team, the Black Princesses, won their 11th gold medal at the African Games, securing an impressive 2-1 comeback extra-time victory against Nigeria at the Cape Coast stadium on Thursday night.

 

 

Ghana’s goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku fumbled a ball in the penalty box, allowing Edeh Njideka to score in the 23rd minute, bringing Nigeria ahead.

 

 

Yussif Basigi’s girls scored a goal in the 77th minute when Tracy Twum scored from a space on the left flank, leveling Ghana’s score.

 

 

The match went into extra time after no team could win in regulation.

 

 

Mukarama Abdulai scored the game-winning goal in extra time, causing a tense atmosphere at Cape Coast Stadium.

 

 

However, the Princesses managed to secure a victory despite facing late pressure from the Super Falconets.

 

 

Ghana wins the second gold medal in women’s football at the African Games, following its 2015 victory under coach Yussif Basigi.
