Popular Ghanaian social media personality and actress Afya Gongon has shared her inspiring journey from a young woman in Techiman to becoming one of Ghana’s most recognizable online content creators, crediting hard work, consistency, and prayer for her success.
Speaking in an interview with Abena Ghana on Journey TV Show on Adom TV, Afya Gongon said her passion for entertaining people continues to drive her every day.
“I love the job that I am doing, so I do it wholeheartedly. The fans are very important to me, so it’s all about making them happy,” she said.
Afya disclosed that she actively ventured into content creation in 2020 after completing Senior High School in Techiman. Before pursuing acting, she had started a few small businesses, but her passion for entertainment eventually took over.
“I became interested in acting after SHS. Initially, my parents didn’t like the idea, but my mother later supported me. I rented a single room and started from there. Then TikTok came into the picture, and that’s how I landed on social media,” she recounted.
She also revealed the story behind her popular stage name. According to her, she was originally known as Afia Noble until fellow content creator SoakingsGh, whom she describes as a brother, suggested the name Afya Gongon.
“My name was Afia Noble, but SoakingsGh gave me the name Afya Gongon. We started shooting videos with the name as a joke, and one of our uploads reached about 3.5 million views. From that moment, the name stuck.”
Reflecting on the entertainment industry, Afya admitted that the journey has not been easy, although social media has created more opportunities for creatives today than in the past.
“The industry is not easy. It was even harder before social media became popular. In every job you will have haters, even within your own family. If everyone likes you, then something is wrong,” she said.
She added that she has experienced betrayal from people she trusted but considers those experiences valuable lessons that have contributed to her personal and professional growth.
“You can trust someone today, and tomorrow they betray you. That’s how the industry is, but I’ve learned from many experiences, and they have helped me grow.”
Although she has never lived in a ghetto, Afya said she is capable of portraying different characters convincingly on screen.
“I have never stayed in a ghetto before, but I can act ghetto-life roles very well. I’m not a one-sided actress; I can play different roles.”
Despite her growing popularity, she disclosed that she is yet to launch a YouTube channel. She, however, continues to secure brand deals while praying for even greater opportunities.
“We haven’t opened a YouTube channel yet. I get some deals, and I’m praying and working hard for more. Acting is what I really want to do, and I hope it takes me to greater heights.”
Afya also revealed that most of their content is created using mobile phones, proving that expensive equipment is not always necessary for success.
“We use our phones to shoot our videos.”
Touching on her humble lifestyle, the actress said she still uses public transportation and has no shame in doing so.
“It’s not easy, but I always remember where I came from. I still use public transport, and I’m perfectly okay with it.”
According to her, acting was the foundation of her career, while social media amplified her fame.
“I shoot more movies. Movies brought me into the limelight, but social media gave me the fame.”
Speaking about her working relationship with fellow content creator SoakingsGh, Afya admitted that they often disagree but always resolve their differences through honest communication.
“We fight a lot and disagree on many things, but we solve our problems immediately and move on. We don’t carry issues into the next day. We always speak openly whenever one of us is unhappy.”
She also revealed that success on social media requires persistence, noting that not every video performs well.
“I never imagined I would reach this level, but I kept working hard and praying every step of the way. Sometimes we upload videos that don’t get views, so we delete them and try again.”
Responding to speculation about a possible romantic relationship with SoakingsGh, Afya firmly dismissed the idea.
“No, I will never marry SoakingsGh. We are more like siblings than lovers. There are no marriage intentions between us.”
Afya Gongon’s story continues to inspire many young creatives, demonstrating that resilience, consistency, and dedication can transform humble beginnings into a successful career in Ghana’s rapidly growing digital entertainment industry.
