Veteran Ghanaian actor Fred Amugi has spoken publicly about one of the most heartbreaking experiences of his life — the loss of his daughter, Angela Naa Momo Amugi, who died after battling cancer.
According to the celebrated actor, his daughter’s illness stretched over a long period, during which the family’s life revolved around frequent hospital visits and admissions. He said the situation became so demanding that he often spent long hours at her bedside, supporting her through treatment while medical staff monitored her condition. On several occasions, exhaustion would take over, and he would drift off while doctors continued their care.
Amugi revealed that at the time, his employers showed him compassion and allowed him the flexibility needed to be with his daughter during her medical journey. He described that support as crucial in helping him remain present throughout her treatment.
Angela, who worked as a nurse at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, was later transferred to the 37 Military Hospital as her condition worsened. Despite the efforts made to save her, she passed away just nine days before what would have been her 21st birthday.
The actor also shared that the tragedy struck while he was still pursuing studies at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), where he was only two days away from completing his programme. He recalled receiving a call while on campus urging him to rush to the hospital, expecting to find his daughter still receiving care.
Instead, he was met with the devastating news that she had died.
He described the moment as the most painful experience of his life, explaining that the shock left him emotionally numb rather than breaking down in tears. According to him, the weight of the loss was so overwhelming that it felt like all feeling had been drained from him in that instant.
Years on, Amugi says the memory of his daughter remains deeply painful, describing her passing as a wound that never fully heals. However, he added that he draws strength and comfort from his two surviving sons as he continues to navigate life after the tragedy.
