Mexico delivered a composed and clinical performance to defeat Ghana 2-0 in an international friendly in Puebla, taking full advantage of defensive mistakes and controlling large spells of the game.
The home side made an immediate impact, striking just two minutes after kickoff. A lapse at the back by Ghana gifted Brian Gutierrez a clear opportunity, and he made no mistake, calmly slotting the ball past goalkeeper Benjamin Asare to give Mexico an early advantage.
That goal set the tone for the opening half, with Mexico dictating possession and creating the more dangerous chances. Ghana struggled to settle, and the hosts comfortably carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.
After the break, Ghana showed renewed intent and nearly found a way back into the contest. Felix Afena Gyan tested the goalkeeper with a powerful shot in the 51st minute, while Jesurun Rak-Sakyi came agonizingly close moments later, his long-range effort crashing off the crossbar.
However, just as Ghana appeared to be building momentum, Mexico struck again. Guillermo Martínez finished off a swift move in the 54th minute, doubling the lead and effectively putting the game out of reach.
Mexico’s dominance was reflected in the numbers, finishing with 59 percent possession and eight shots on target, compared to Ghana’s three. Despite conceding twice, Asare produced six saves to prevent a heavier defeat.
The hosts also proved more dangerous from set pieces, earning nine corners to Ghana’s three and consistently applying pressure in attacking areas.
Ghana were led by assistant coach Desmond Offei, with head coach Carlos Queiroz absent due to personal reasons. The match served as part of the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Attention now turns to their next friendly against Wales on Tuesday, June 2, at the Cardiff City Stadium, as Ghana continue their build-up with just 19 days remaining before the tournament.
