Black Sherif Wins Big, Gives Guinness Ghana GHS100K to Arathejay and Gonaboy

Award-winning Ghanaian musician Black Sherif has once again captured public attention—not just for his music, but for a gesture that underscores his support for rising talents in the industry.

The “Kwaku the Traveller” hitmaker made headlines during the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre in Accra on May 9, where he was crowned Artiste of the Year for the second time in his career.

Earlier in the evening, Black Sherif had secured the Album of the Year award for his project Iron Boy, which came with a GHS100,000 sponsorship package from Guinness Ghana. The package was intended to support his next album and host a listening party.

However, while delivering his acceptance speech, the artiste surprised the audience by announcing that he would rather have the sponsorship redirected to support two emerging musicians—Arathejay and Gonaboy. According to him, the album production support should go to Arathejay, who is gaining attention with the song “Jesus Christ 2,” while the listening party package should be handed to Gonaboy, known for “Same Timbs.”

The move was met with applause from the audience, as it highlighted Black Sherif’s willingness to share opportunities and invest in the growth of other creatives within the Ghanaian music scene.

His gesture adds to a growing reputation not only as a chart-topping performer but also as an artiste committed to uplifting others. It also reflects a broader call within the industry for established acts to create space and opportunities for emerging talent.

Black Sherif first won Artiste of the Year in 2023, when the awards scheme was known as the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), following the success of his debut album The Villain I Never Was and hit songs including “Kwaku the Traveller” and “First and Second Sermon.”

With this latest win and act of generosity, he continues to solidify his influence both on and off the stage.
