Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has pushed back against the notion that a career in music is not a legitimate business, describing such views as dismissive and outdated.
In a recent post shared across his social media platforms, the celebrated artist—known in private life as Micheal Owusu Addo—addressed a question he says he frequently encounters: “Apart from music, what business do you do? Like, a proper business?” According to Sarkodie, the framing of that question undermines the scale and seriousness of the music industry.
He noted that music is one of the largest industries globally, generating significant revenue and employment opportunities across multiple sectors. “It honestly comes off as a bit insulting,” he wrote, emphasizing that music should be regarded with the same respect as more traditionally recognized professions.
Sarkodie further explained that pursuing music is not merely a passion-driven endeavor but a calculated business decision. Like any other enterprise, he said, it involves risks, strategic planning, and long-term investment. However, when approached with discipline and the right mindset, it can be highly rewarding.
