The Ga-Dangme Community Associations of Virginia (GCAV) successfully hosted the 2024 Homowo Festival on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

The event took place at the Amphitheatre at Lee District Park, 6601 Telegraph Road, Alexandria, VA, beginning at approximately 12:00 p.m. The Homowo Festival, a traditional harvest celebration observed by the Ga-Dangme people of Ghana, attracted a large gathering of community members, invited guests, and dignitaries.

The celebration was graced by the presence of key traditional leaders, including Nii Ayi Anafo I (Chief), Naa Korkor Botor I (Queen), Ataa Okoe (Wulomo – traditional priest), Nii Ayi Kakalor (Asafoatse – warrior leader), and Naa Ahiney Dede Otah (Asafoanye – female warrior leader). Their participation brought cultural authenticity to the event, highlighting the rich traditions of the Ga-Dangme people.

In attendance were the GCAV executives and members, along with several distinguished guests, including invited chiefs and their subjects, representatives from the Ga-Dangme Maryland and Hagerstown Associations, members of the Osu Citizens Club, the KMC and Friends group, the Royal Ladies, Goldstar Air, and other invited attendees.

The festival showcased a vibrant display of Ga-Dangme culture, featuring traditional drumming by the Unity Group, dancing with tunes from DJ Risky, and the sharing of Kpokpoi, the ceremonial dish of the Homowo festival. The event served not only as a celebration of the harvest but also as an opportunity for the Ga-Dangme community in Virginia to connect with their roots, share their heritage with others, and strengthen their bonds within the diaspora.

The Homowo festival, which means “hooting at hunger,” is a significant cultural event for the Ga-Dangme people, symbolizing the end of famine and the arrival of a bountiful harvest. The 2024 edition in Virginia was a remarkable celebration of unity, tradition, and cultural pride.

As the festival came to a close, attendees expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate their heritage and looked forward to continuing the Homowo tradition for generations to come.
