Forget Bawumia; he’s not credible — Rex Omar

Veteran Highlife musician and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Spokesperson on Tourism and Creative Arts, Rex Omar, has criticised Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr.Mahamudu Bawumia, questioning his credibility to the creative arts sector.

Reacting to promises made by Dr. Bawumia during the NPP’s 2024 manifesto launch, Rex Omar dismissed them as unreliable.

“Let’s put Bawumia aside because he has not proven to be credible over the years,” he said on UTV’s United Showbiz.

Dr. Bawumia had pledged to work with private sector organisations to boost investment in tourism and creative arts, introduce a Visa-Free policy for African and Caribbean nationals, and create a Travel Protocol Service (TPS) to assist creatives with international engagements.

However, Omar expressed doubt about these promises, particularly questioning the feasibility of issuing diplomatic passports to creatives and influencing other countries’ policies.

Omar remarked,When they write convoluted promises like these, how can people take them seriously? Is Bawumia going to issue diplomatic passports to creatives or dictate how other countries should accept them? Even some of our diplomats face rejection abroad.”

The NDC spokesperson also highlighted the government’s failure to fulfil a longstanding promise to build ultramodern theatres across Ghana, which was a key commitment in the NPP’s 2016 and 2020 manifestos.

“You promised to build ultramodern theatres since 2016 but haven’t delivered even one.

There hasn’t been an apology or an explanation for this failure,” Omar added.
