Ghana’s Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that from next week, travelers entering Ghana will bypass traditional immigration processes by using electronic gates (E-Gates) with their Ghana Cards. This development marks another milestone in the government’s commitment to digital transformation and easing travel protocols for Ghanaians.
Dr. Bawumia, speaking at the official launch of Ghana’s first electric bus fleet on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, emphasized that the initiative was part of a broader effort to modernize Ghana’s systems. “When we announced that Ghanaians could use the Ghana Card to travel in and out of the country, the opposition doubted it. But today, we have delivered on that promise,” he stated confidently.
He further highlighted the successful implementation of Mobile Money Interoperability, which has revolutionized financial transactions in Ghana. Despite initial opposition to the idea, Dr. Bawumia noted that Ghana has become the only country in Africa with a fully interoperable domestic payment system. “The opposition said it couldn’t be done, but we proved otherwise. Today, Ghanaians can seamlessly transfer money across all banks and mobile money platforms,” he remarked.
The Vice President’s comments came during the unveiling of a groundbreaking initiative—the country’s first fleet of electric buses. The buses, which will commence test operations this week, form a significant part of the government’s strategy to introduce sustainable and cost-effective transportation solutions.
“This is a major milestone in modernizing Ghana’s public transport system. The electric buses are not just environmentally friendly but also cost-efficient, which will benefit our citizens immensely,” Dr. Bawumia said.
The government’s push for digitization, financial inclusion, and green energy is positioning Ghana as a leader in innovation on the African continent.
