TikTok personality Obaapa Christy Ba has opened up about how she transitioned from nursing to social media and eventually became known for her resemblance to gospel musician Obaapa Christy.
Speaking in an interview with Abena Ghana on Adom TV, Obaapa Christy Ba said she was initially more interested in movies and later trained in nursing before circumstances forced her to abandon the profession.
According to her, she turned to TikTok after leaving nursing, where her resemblance to the gospel musician quickly became a major talking point among social media users.
She explained that people had described her as looking like Obaapa Christy even during her childhood. However, the comparison became more prominent after she posted a TikTok video asking the public whether they thought she resembled the gospel musician.
She said the video went viral overnight, attracting more than one million views, with Obaapa Christy herself commenting on it.
“Since then, whenever I post videos, people comment and call me Obaapa Christy look-alike,” she explained.
She revealed that a relative of Obaapa Christy later advised her to adopt the name “Obaapa Christy Ba,” which she eventually did.
After about a year, she travelled from Kumasi to Accra to attend Obaapa Christy’s “Sing Like Obaapa” programme. She said she was initially nervous about approaching the gospel musician but gathered courage after praying.
According to her, Obaapa Christy welcomed her warmly and instructed those around her to give her VIP treatment while she prepared for the programme.
She further recounted that she was later given an opportunity to use the microphone during the event after seeking encouragement from her manager.
“When they called me, Obaapa Christy prayed for me and gave me her slippers. To me, it symbolised getting to where she has reached,” she said.
She added that after the programme, Obaapa Christy arranged for her driver to take her part of the way home.
Since that encounter, she said Obaapa Christy has consistently involved her in her activities and has become like a mother to her.
“Whatever she does, she involves me. She is my mother now,” she said.
Obaapa Christy Ba also disclosed that she left nursing after the husband of one of her sisters, who had been supporting her financially, was killed.
She said the loss of that support made it difficult for her to continue her nursing career.
Despite her growing popularity on social media and in entertainment, Obaapa Christy Ba said she remains cautious about life because of her humble background.
“I am from a poor home, so I am very careful. I have also realised that if you rush in life, you will not go anywhere,” she said.
She added that entertainment is the career she wants to pursue and said she has no immediate plans to leave Ghana for another country.
“I don’t believe in leaving Ghana to go to another country,” she stated.
Obaapa Christy Ba has also been nominated for an award in the Discovery category. She said she was grateful to be recognised for her work.
On her personal life, she disclosed that she is currently unmarried and has no children, adding that she would welcome marriage if the opportunity comes.
