Event organiser Nabil Alhassan has disclosed that the late highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, requested that fellow musician Ofori Amponsah be taken off the bill for a Valentine’s Day concert slated for February 15, 2025.
In an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Showbiz A-Z on Joy FM, Nabil recounted that preparations for the show at the Accra International Conference Centre’s Grand Arena were already well underway when the unexpected request came through.
According to him, the organising team had already secured payments and begun promotions when he received a call from journalist Serwaa Amihere, who said Lumba wanted to speak directly with him.
“Serwaa called and said Daddy was on the line. When I answered, he greeted me and said, ‘Nabil, how are you? I want you to take Ofori off the show,’” Nabil narrated.
Surprised by the instruction, Nabil said he asked Lumba why he wanted Ofori Amponsah removed. Lumba reportedly explained that Ofori was not on the original list of supporting acts. When reminded that Ofori had been part of the confirmed lineup, the veteran singer claimed he had heard that Ofori had spoken ill of him.
Nabil said he found the situation baffling, particularly because Ofori Amponsah had recently performed at Daddy Lumba’s birthday celebration, where the two appeared to share a cordial relationship.
