Rocky Dawuni Sees Diplomatic Passport as Tool to Boost Ghana’s Global Presence

Ghanaian reggae icon and Grammy nominee Rocky Dawuni says his recently issued diplomatic passport is less about privilege and more about enhancing his ability to serve the nation on the world stage.

Speaking in an interview on Okay FM, Dawuni explained that the move was unexpected, noting that he did not request or lobby for the document. Instead, he believes it is recognition of his long-standing work as a cultural ambassador for Ghana.

“There was no lobbying involved. My career has always carried Ghana with it—through international festivals, advocacy work, and diplomatic engagements. If the government believes providing this passport makes my work easier, then it is in the country’s interest,” he said.

Over the years, Dawuni has built a profile that extends far beyond music. He is a United Nations ambassador, has performed at major international concerts in countries such as Costa Rica and Brazil, and has taken part in discussions that shaped legislation in the U.S. Congress. For him, the passport is simply a facilitator, not the highlight of his journey.

“Being invited to sit at global tables, including where international laws are shaped, is the real work. The passport only allows me to do more for Ghana without unnecessary barriers,” Dawuni remarked.

While some have questioned his eligibility for the honor, Dawuni insists that the criticism misses the point. “If people disagree, their issue is with the government, not me. I will continue to focus on using my platform to project Ghana positively,” he said.

He also made it clear that carrying a diplomatic passport does not tie him to politics. Instead, it supports his role as a bridge between Ghana and the global community, particularly in areas of culture, music, and advocacy.

For Dawuni, the recognition is less a personal achievement and more a national opportunity: “I see it as a tool for Ghana’s benefit, not mine.”
