Leaving Highly Spiritual: Mr. Drew on Growth and Industry Realities

Ghanaian artiste Mr. Drew has reflected on his time at Kaywa’s Highly Spiritual Music label, revealing how the experience shaped his approach to navigating the music industry.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie, Mr. Drew shared that being actively involved in various aspects of his career while at the label prepared him for the challenges he would later face as an independent artist.

“I did fund some of the stuff while I was on the label,” he disclosed, explaining that despite not being contractually obligated to do so, he took it upon himself to invest in his career. “I felt I needed to make things work for myself.”

Reflecting on his seven-year journey in the industry, Mr. Drew acknowledged that understanding the business side of music earlier would have been beneficial. “There’s a lot to learn—how your money comes in, how to manage it, and the importance of paperwork,” he noted.

Initially, he assumed that being signed under a 360 deal meant he didn’t need to focus on business intricacies. However, stepping out as an independent artist changed his perspective. “Once you get off the label, you learn a lot,” he said.

Mr. Drew, known for hits like Dwe, Mood, This Year, Case, and Sneaky, is currently promoting his latest EP, The Loverboy.
