Bawumia Vows to Approve Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill If Elected President

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to swiftly approve the anti-LGBTQ+ bill if he secures victory in the upcoming elections.

The contentious bill, designed to outlaw LGBTQ+ practices in Ghana, is currently awaiting final approval. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has yet to assent to the legislation due to ongoing legal challenges concerning its constitutionality. The Supreme Court is expected to deliver a decisive ruling on the matter on December 18, 2024.

Addressing a congregation at the Philadelphia Church in Kumasi, Dr. Bawumia reaffirmed his resolve to ensure the bill is enacted as soon as all legal hurdles are cleared.

“There are critical policies yet to be finalized, and I am committed to completing them when I assume office,” he said. “One of these is the LGBTQ+ bill, which I will sign without delay. Another is the Anti-Witchcraft bill, which is equally important to the well-being of our people.”

Dr. Bawumia’s comments reflect his determination to address issues he considers vital to preserving Ghanaian values and safeguarding societal harmony.
