Ghana Launches 5G Network Today, Bringing High-Speed Internet to Millions

As of today, Ghanaians will experience the transformative power of Fifth Generation (5G) technology, marking a milestone in the nation’s digital journey. The launch of 5G promises unprecedented internet speeds, smoother streaming, faster upload and download times, and more reliable connections, bringing Ghana closer to the forefront of the digital world.

The rollout, led by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation, comes after extensive preparation and investment in infrastructure. Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful stated that the government is committed to ensuring that Ghanaians enjoy the benefits of high-speed mobile broadband services, a critical component in achieving the Digital Ghana vision.

This ambitious initiative is supported by partnerships with seven major industry players, including Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana. Together, they have formed the Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC), which has secured a 5G license and aims to make the service accessible nationwide within the next six months.

“The 5G network is not just about faster internet,” said Minister Owusu-Ekuful. “It’s about improving lives through technology, enhancing access to healthcare, education, and financial services, and positioning Ghana as a leader in West Africa’s digital economy.” She emphasized that the partnership is focused on bridging the digital divide and fostering financial inclusion by making high-speed internet more affordable.

Operating on the same radio frequencies as previous generations like 3G and 4G, 5G technology offers significantly enhanced performance, setting a new standard in connectivity. With Ghana’s entry into the 5G landscape, the country joins a growing list of African nations, including South Africa, Nigeria, and Egypt, that have embraced next-generation technology.

The introduction of 5G is expected to attract investment in Ghana’s tech industry, opening new opportunities for digital innovation and growth. In the long term, NGIC’s vision extends beyond Ghana, with plans to expand 5G services across other parts of Africa.

This technological leap represents a crucial step forward for Ghana, empowering citizens with faster, more reliable internet that will enhance everyday digital experiences and drive economic development.
