The Women in Aviation International (WAI) Ghana Chapter marked the 10th annual Girls in Aviation Day with the theme, “Mentor, Inspire and Empower Girls.” The event brought together female students from various schools, including Tema Methodist Day Senior High School, Corpus Christi Senior High School, Our Lady of Mercy Senior High School, and African Science Academy, to engage with professionals in the aviation industry.
Held to inspire and encourage young girls to explore careers in aviation, the day was filled with mentorship sessions, interactive workshops, and career guidance led by industry experts. Representatives from the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), and other sponsors, including Amandi, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines, played key roles in fostering the students’ enthusiasm for aviation careers.
In her opening remarks, a spokesperson from WAI Ghana emphasized the importance of empowering young women to break barriers and take up leadership roles in a traditionally male-dominated industry. “Our aim is to ensure these girls leave today with a sense of purpose, ambition, and clarity about the many opportunities available in the aviation sector,” she said.
The Girls in Aviation Day initiative is part of a global movement by Women in Aviation International to provide young girls with a better understanding of aviation careers and the confidence to pursue them.
The event at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) concluded with a tour of the airport’s facilities, giving students a firsthand look at the operations that keep the aviation industry running smoothly.
With continued support from sponsors like GACL, GCAA, and international airlines, the WAI Ghana Chapter aims to expand its reach and impact, ensuring that more young women across the country are inspired to consider aviation as a viable career option.
