Late Ghanaian Dancehall artiste, Priscilla Opoku Kwarteng’s song ‘Sponsor’ has been adjudged “Afropop Song of the Year” at the ongoing 19th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) taking place at the Accra International Conference Centre.
Known in music circles as Ebony Reigns, the 90’s bad Girl beat competition to Adina, King Promise, KiDi, MzVee, Kurl Songx, Magnom and Stonegwoy to emerge winner in the category.
Her manager Bullet, OgeeTheMC, her parents and some members of the RuffTown Record label were on stage to pick up the awards in her absence.
Ebony has also been nominated in the Reggae/Artiste of the Year category in competition with Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale and MzVee.
The “Sponsor” hitmaker has been tipped by industry players as the most likely musician to win Artiste of the year despite her untimely passing early this year.
Sponsored by telecommunication giants Vodafone, and organized by Charterhouse Ghana, the Ghana Music Awards is an award scheme designed to recognize, celebrate the hard work and dedication of various stakeholders and players in the entertainment industry.
Meanwhile Shatta Wale, Stonebwoy, the late Ebony, rapper Sarkodie and Joe Mettle are all up for the coveted Artiste of the year award.
The theme for this year edition of the event is dubbed “Our Music Beyond Borders”.
Thousands of patrons have throng the venue of the event while others stay glued to their television sets to witness presentation of awards to musicians amidst performances.
