The Chairman of the Rastafari Council of Ghana, Ahuma Bosco Ocansey, aka Daddy Bosco has reacted to comment made by the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Eric Angel Carbonu regarding the Rastafarian students’ case ruling.

An Accra High Court on Monday, May 31, 2021 delivered its ruling regarding the denial of two Rastafarian students; Tyrone Marhguy and Oheneba Nkrabea admission to Achimota School because they failed to cut their dreadlocks.

Justice Gifty Adjei Addo, the Presiding Judge disagreed with the submissions of the Attorney General and granted all the reliefs separately sought by the embattled students except the relief of compensation in the case of Tyrone Marhguy.

According to Justice Addo, it is preposterous for the Attorney General to have even suggested that the two were not students in the first place.

Justice Gifty Adjei Addo consequently directed Achimota School to admit the two Rastafarian students.

The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Eric Angel Carbonu, reacted to the ruling saying the decision will encourage other students to wear all manner of hair styles.

He noted that the Accra High Court has made teachers work concerning discipline of students so easy. Mr Carbonu added that should any parent or institution wants their ward to be disciplined according to school’s rules and regulations then the appropriate quarters to win that case to allow teachers instil discipline is the court.

“We raised concerns that let us obey school rules. That if you take your child to school, obey school rules. If the court feels that the school rules are not necessary, so be it. I don’t think teachers will lose a single hair on this. But let us also not limit this to Rasta, any form of hairdo should be allowed in the school and I will admonish my members that you don’t go and say they said Rasta, that will be a very myopic way of looking at it.”

Reacting to Mr Eric Angel Carbonu’s statement about discipline in schools being thrown out to the dogs due to the Accra High Court’s ruling, Ahuma Bosco Ocansey said, “Angel Carbonu’s comment was an emotional statement and with all due respect, I think it was an unfortunate and unguarded statement.”

Director of Communications and Special Projects of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and onetime Administrator of the Union further stated that he believes the NAGRAT President’s comment about the ruling is his personal opinion and not a collective decision of the group he leads.

Daddy Bosco commented saying, “No one has to misconstrued the court’s ruling that morally, teachers have no role to play in disciplining a student.”

For the Rastafari Council of Ghana, the Accra High Court’s ruling is significant, because it is a National victory.

“It is a victory for the good people of Ghana, it is a victory for our constitution, meaning the constitution of our country is working.” Daddy Bosco told Angel FM

Daddy Bosco advised that no individual should use this court ruling as yardstick thinking the court will grant them the opportunity to do same.
