Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet, TUI, Virgin Atlantic and BA suffering as Heathrow passenger numbers drop 90%

Airports and major UK airlines are continuing to count the cost of the Covid-19 impact with passenger numbers down 90 per cent on pre-pandemic levels in some places.

New figures released today (June 11) show how the number passengers travelling last month from Heathrow Airport in London – the busiest in the UK – was just 675,000 compared to 6,769,000 in May 2019.

It comes after Airlines UK members including Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet, TUI, Virgin Atlantic and BA issued a plea this week to Chancellor Rishi Sunak to fund new “targeted economic support measures” to safeguard thousands of industry jobs.

Changes made last week by the government to the ‘green list’ has reduced the number of viable options for holidaymakers looking for quarantine-free travel.

Portugal was moved on to the amber list, requiring 10 days of self-isolation, while countries including Egypt, Sri Lanka and Costa Rica were bumped up to the red list meaning anyone returning to the UK must quarantine in a government approved hotel.

The uncertainty surrounding changes the travel lists is causing huge difficulties for Brits, airports and airlines to plan ahead this summer as the government looks to avoid bringing in new coronavirus variants into the UK.
