Hospitality industry records appreciable growth in recent years

Available data gathered by the Ghana Tourism Authority indicates that there has been a tremendous growth in the hospitality industry especially with hotels.

According to the data, Hotels throughout the country in the year 2015 were two thousand seven hundred and 26, but increased to more than three thousand as at last year, indicating a boom in the sector in Ghana.

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Ekow Sampson, made this known at the inauguration of the new National Executives and the Second National Council meeting by the Ghana Hotels Association at Koforidua in the Eastern Region. He commended the hoteliers for their enormous contribution to the nation through taxes and employment.

Mr. Sampson said tourism is ranked as the fourth income earner to Ghana’s economy and called on all partners to find a solution to the high interest rate on loans from banks to enable them to expand their businesses and go the extra mile in their contribution to national development.

Speaking on the theme “Reducing Hotel Rates in Ghana: The Role of Government”, Director in Charge of Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Olivia Opoku-Adomah, said as part of efforts to reduce rates of hotels, government has decided to put up Akwaaba and Marine drive hotels at tourism destinations throughout the county for tourists to have conducive places to lodge while on visit.
