Over two thousand Junior High School pupils from 17 school within the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region thronged the halls of the Assemblies of God Church in Aflao last Saturday to be taken through a day’s mentorship session on their choices concerning the future.

Organized by non-governmental organization, VFL-Ghana as part of its yearly activities to empower young people through lessons onliving a decent and responsible life and achieving their desired professions, the one day session aimed at grooming a generation of well-trained and responsible future leaders.

Leading the sessions of encouraging the pupils, the Chief Executive Officer of VFL-Ghana, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, a former Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, expressed her warmest appreciation for the massive turnout.

Sharing stories of her own life as a growing child with the pupils, she further applauded them for the obvious show of desire for mentorship and towards their future by advising them to be the best of whatever they have been told.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie, also Maama Dzramedo I of the Aflao Traditional Area, also took time to explain the importance of things such as personal grooming and hygiene, relationships and discipline with the children.

She was particularly also concerned about the growing generation of young non-readers and therefore urged them to consciously inculcate reading habits into their daily lives mainly because the age of technological advancement in which they are growing in could sway them from actually appreciating the beauty of reading.

It is for this reason that VFL-Ghana has built and stocked a library in Aflao to encourage many of them to take up the habits of reading again.

Other subjects discussed were on self-discipline, determination, taking studies serious, engaging in community service, proper use of the internet, sex education, menstrual hygiene, adopting a personal learning timetable, eating healthy, being respectful and humility.

A Captain in the Ghana Army, Ekow Sagoe, gave the pupils a talk on the discipline and lessons of being a soldier and why there is the need to uphold discipline at all times if they ever want to join the Force.

He also emphasized the need to develop a good plan towards building a career and shared with them his idea of an ideal template on planning their career.

Programs Coordinator of VFL-GHANA, Alice Mama Akosua Amoako explained the organization’s plans to introduce a Digital Learning Programs for the Children and the Youth in the community which will include E-learning, Website Development and Robotics.

She said this program will be introduced to help build the career of the youth who are interested in developing a digital profession.

Some dignitaries present were Madam Rejoice Kporku, Assistant Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Ketu South;Madam Cecilia Dokli, Girls Education Coordinator of GES, Ketu South; Mr. Hope Abraham Agbekponu, Guidance and Counselling Director of GES, Ketu South; Mr. Napoleon Atisu, GES PRO, Ketu South; and teachers of the various Junior High Schools.
