Heavy police presence at lake Bosomtwe, turned away revellers on Easter Monday

There was heavy police presence at Lake Bosomtwe in the Ashanti Region on Monday as revellers were prevented from engaging in various activities during the Easter festivities as part of measures to curb the spread of the covid-19.

Over the years, Lake Bosomtwe has been one of the most preferred destinations for relaxation and tourism for residents in the Ashanti Region, especially during Easter celebrations.

Just like last year, revellers were not allowed to go to the area as many police personnel were deployed to the site to ensure strict compliance.

During Citi News’ visit to the area, the police were seen turning some persons away as they did not find the reasons given as tangible.

Speaking to Citi News, the leader of the enforcement team who is also the Bosomtwe District Police Commander, DSP Eric Akwaboa says the enforcement is in line with the National directive.

“Following the directives from the police administration about modalities on how this Easter festivities would be observed, the Bosomtwe District Assembly, led by the District Chief Executive conveyed a District Security Council (DISEC) meeting. We met at the DISEC level and decided on how to prevent people from visiting the lake. This is the only “beach” in the Ashanti Region. Normally people come to the Lake to have fun. We thought that if we don’t do anything about it, people would be overcrowded there and that the problem of people contracting the coronavirus will be increased in the district”.

Meanwhile, some business operators in the area say their businesses have been negatively affected as a result of the decision not to allow people to visit the area.

They explained to Citi News that they had made some arrangements ahead of the festivities but have incurred losses as people have been prevented to visit the area.

“We have been suffering these days, and we were hoping things could get better on Easter Monday, but that has not been the case. We went to purchase some items in anticipation of high patronage. We have therefore incurred losses,” a food vendor, Adwoa Fordjour lamented.

“We were not able to celebrate it last year and this year has been the same. Since Friday, there has been heavy security presence here to prevent people from coming in. This has really affected our businesses, but there is nothing we can do since it is for our own good,” another business operator, Adwoa Serwaa stated.
