Ghanaian reveals he was mistaken for a thief and was almost burnt alive in Nigeria

London based Ghanaian author, John Koomson has disclosed that he was mistaken for a thief in Lagos, Nigeria and was almost burnt alive.

Speaking on SVTV Africa, John indicated that he stayed in Nigeria in the 80s while on his journey to London. According to him, he had visited a brother in another state but arrived late only to meet some vigilantes who thought he was a thief.

“I paid my brother a visit in another state so I got back home at dawn and the vigilantes saw mistook me for a thief. Immediately they put tyres around my neck and poured petrol on me.

Then one of the vigilantes asked them to stop and said ‘I know this man. He’s a good man.’ He also mentioned my landlord’s name. He (landlord) is a well-respected man on that street too,” he told host, DJ Nyaami.

He stated that the vigilante and his landlord were his saviours for that night.

Mr Koomson also discussed his journey from Nigeria through to Italy and London with no money and/or proper documentation.
