Disability Sports Festival scheduled for April 22 in Accra

The Disability Sports Festival is scheduled for April 22 at the Accra Sports Stadium with all disabled teams expected to participate.

The events include, football, volleyball, basketball, netball as well as tennis with Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah as the Special Guest of Honour.

This was announced on Friday when the Richoff Disability Sports Foundation, headed by former Liberty Professionals player, Richard Offei paid a courtesy call on the sector Minister,Mr. Asiamah.

According to Mr. Offei, British High Commissioner to Ghana, John Benjamin and Minster for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba would also be Special Guests for the event.

“This is an opportunity for disabled people across the country to meet and compete among themselves and also feel part of society,”he stated.

The call on the Minister, Mr. Offei said was introduce the foundation to him and explain their activities as well as the way forward for disability people in the country.

He said, “we are currently constructing the first ever ultra modern disability sports complex in the country to support disabled people through sports and education as done in England.”

He added that, the country needs to support disability sports as there are great potentials on the streets that must be nurtured to win trophies for Ghana as they have done over the years.

Though they did not meet the Minister in person, the federation was received by the Ministry’s Technical Advisor, Dr. Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah.

Dr. Owusu congratulated the foundation for their initiatives adding that the Ministry would do everything possible to support them.

“The disability sports complex is a laudable project which also serves as a means of integrating everybody into society and would be supported by the Ministry,”he stated.

He added that, another meeting would be arranged for the federation to meet with the Minister to plan for the festival and other activities.

Alive and Kicking also presented 10 footballs and 10 basketballs to the federation to support their activities.
