AU Village Resident Resists Ejection …After Nearly 4yrs Of Non Payment Of Rent

Despite the fact that Mr. Steve Mawuenyega and wife Penelope Jones Mawuenyega have both refused to pay rent in nearly four years which runs into the tune of $157,000 at their rented home inside the AU Village in Cantonment, the couple are rather digging their heels in the face of eviction.

According to the property owner Chris Samora, who spoke to this reporter at the Cantonment Police Station where the matter is pending, he stated that Mr. & Mrs. Mawuenyega have been his tenants since 2012 but in the last three years and some three months they have just decided not to pay their rent for no apparent reason or justification.

He said, “I have exhausted all the dialogue approach to retrieve the money owed me but Steve and his wife don’t seem to be bothered and therefore I have decided to evict them”.

“I have gone through all necessary and relevant procedures including a notice of eviction from the court but they still won’t budge”, Mr. Samora narrated.

He also mentioned that several attempts to serve them notice from the rent control also proved futile because the couple have been elusive and had left warning with the security at the gate not to permit anyone to enter or post anything on the wall.

He added that quite apart from the rent issues, the house is long due renovation and therefore the tenants need to vacate the premises to make room for the planned renovation exercise to be carried out.

Again, Mr. Samora intimated that “as we speak, they are also owing ECG separately to the tune Gh¢80,838.00 from bills only.”

The landlord further recounted that a few days ago “we went to the AU Village to pack their stuffs out of the house to start the renovation but Penelope quickly run to the Cantonment police station and they intervened and invited us. After the discussions with the police, they gave us a roadmap which Penelope and the husband have decided to flout so we will advise ourselves”.

In a separate interview with Mrs. Mawuenyega, she admitted to the fact that her husband maybe owing but argued that the landlord has failed to serve her notice and that she reported the matter to police.
