ATWAG to empower members (Video)

The Arts and Tourism Writers Association of Ghana (ATWAG) is set to host a series of training programmes to empower its members to improve their gate-keeping and agenda setting efforts.

The capacity building move is critical in view of the national drive to position arts and tourism as key drivers for socio-economic development.

According to the president of the association, Mr William Asiedu, the programmes will also help arts and tourism writers to upgrade their knowledge of the elements of journalism to enrich their work online and offline.

The president gave the hint when executives of ATWAG called on Veteran Arts Writer and Lecturer, Nanabanyin Dadson at the Africa University College of Communication (AUCC) to discuss how he could host the association’s members to a series of training programmes to help improve their output.

Mr Asiedu gave the assurance that the education programmes will begin soon, after the “necessary groundwork has been done”.

Nanabayin Dadson, who is a former Editor of the Graphic Showbiz and currently, the Head of Journalism at the AUCC agreed to organize workshops and other training programmes for ATWAG saying, the initiative should be geared towards educating writers to be creative.

He was also optimistic that his collaboration with the association will help the members to fully apply the ethics, elements and professional skills in journalism to what they communicate.

The lecturer observed that many writers thought more about content than style, saying “Arts writing should not only be about critiques but also about writing in a way that can help news consumers to connect with artists/artistes.”
Mr Dadson said, “We are in the speed era but journalists should take their time to apply the news elements to make their stories complete.”

The Vice president of ATWAG, Mr Francis Doku observed that many writers failed to apply the elements of journalism, which include verification of information and balance in news writing due to the desire to be the first to break the news, especially online.

Other executive members who were present at the meeting were Mr Mic Yamoah (Secretary) and Mustapha Nii-okai Inusah Aka Attractive mustapha(Organiser).

The association presented a citation to Mr Dadson as a token of their appreciation for honouring their invitation to its inauguration and induction of executive officers on March 2, 2018.
