Indigenous domestic airline, African World Airlines (AWA), has won the “Promising Airline of the Year 2017” and the “Domestic Airline of The Year 2017” at the Ghana National Aviation Awards held in Accra.

The event, designed to recognise the effort of players in the industry, was attended by industry players and senior officials from the Aviation Ministry.

Chief Operating Officer (COO) of AWA, Captain Samuel Thompson, and other senior officials of the airline, received the award on behalf of the airline.

The Deputy Minister for Aviation, Kwabena Darko-Mensah said government is working hard to create a favourable aviation operating environment. He noted that government has restructured the industry for better results. He cited the removal of VAT on domestic airline tickets, which has yielded a 23% increase in domestic air travel in the first five months of 2017, as an example.

African World Airlines flies 5 times daily to Lagos Nigeria and once a day to Abuja. It has daily flights from Accra to Kumasi and Takoradi.

AWA took delivery of its sixth aircraft, an ERJ 145, on Sunday August 27, 2017 as it positions itself to be the airline of choice in the West African sub-region.

The additional aircraft is expected to help the airline grow its regional operations, having successfully serviced the Accra-Lagos-Accra route and, more recently, started servicing the Accra-Abuja-Accra route.

AWA, www.aviationghana.com sources say, is also planning to start flying to new destinations within the sub-region in the not-too-distant-future.

The airline is currently offering passengers traveling from Accra to Lagos and Abuja increased check-in baggage allowance.

Baggage allowance on the Accra-Lagos route has been increased from 23kg to 25kg. Accra to Abuja passengers will also enjoy a baggage increase from 23kg to 30kg.

The increase in check-in baggage is expected to benefit businessmen and traders who ply the routes.
