2022 FIFA WC qualifiers: South Africa scores late to defeat Ghana 1-0

South Africa scored late through Bongokuhle Hlongwane on Monday evening to defeat Ghana 1-0 in the qualifiers to the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar.

Nicknamed the Bafana Bafana, the side after drawing goalless with Zimbabwe last Friday on the road, hosted the Black Stars at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg today to search for a first win of the qualifiers.

Staging a very good fight and emerging as the better side on the day, South Africa deservedly earned a narrow win at the end of a tough contest against an uninspiring Ghana side.

Courtesy of the win, South Africa have now climbed to the top of the standings of Group G with four points from the first two matches in the qualifiers.

For Ghana, the Black Stars remain on three points but no longer top of the Group G standings.

The West African country’s national team have suffered a setback and now has to chase South Africa in the next international break where the Black Stars will play Zimbabwe home and away.

Coach CK Akonnor and his boys must prepare well and ensure they bag the six available points to get the world cup qualifying campaign back on track.
