Some youth from Laribanga, near, Damongo in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region on Thursday evening killed two elephants that had strayed into the community from the Mole National Game Reserve.
They also attacked some officials from the Wildlife Division and snatched a weapon from one of the forest guards who had gone to the scene where the two elephants were killed.
The community members were angry because they claimed the elephants destroyed their farmlands.
They therefore killed the two elephants and decided to share the meat.
The forest guards were attacked when they attempted to stop the community members from sharing the meat.
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP ), Mr. Yusif Mohammed Tanko said it was the Assistant Manager of the Wildlife Division of the Mole National Park who alerted the police about the incident.
DSP Tanko said a team of policemen led by the District Police Commander managed to bring the situation under control.
He said the Wildlife officials were able to take the heads of the elephants together with the ivory away and left the meat for the community folks to share.
